Molecular approaches in diagnostics and therapy of disease
15 ECTS


PRESENTATION

This theoretical course discusses how the new knowledge and new insights into research methods can be applied to the development of new molecular diagnostics and clinical methods of treatment (CMS). The advantages and disadvantages of classical and new research strategies will be described and illustrated using examples in lectures given by recognised experts. These examples will always be with reference to the major chronic diseases and a multi-disciplinary approach. Four modules of 2 weeks each:

1) 
Chronic inflammatory and infectious disease
Central to this module is myocarditis, a disease that leads to heart failure. Infection and chronic inflammation are the key players in this syndrome. The module will focus on how molecular-biological research into this can lead to innovation in terms of diagnostics and therapy.
2)
Immunological disease
This module will focus on asthma and multiple sclerosis. An immunological disorder is the cause of both these diseases. Special attention will be given to current insight into the immunological mechanisms that leads to new research for improvement of the diagnostics and therapy.
3)
Cancer (tumour micro-environment, consequences for treatment)
Surgery, radiation treatment and chemotherapy are the conventional therapies for cancer. This is not effective for almost half of the patients. The expectations of immunotherapy for the treatment of cancer are high. This module will focus on research into immunotherapy, including immuno-cell therapy and vaccination.
4)
Metabolic cardiovascular disease: diabetes and its complications
This module will focus on the development of obesity into insulin-resistant and type 2 diabetes and the consequences for cardiovascular functioning, with special emphasis on the role of hyperglycaemia, dyslipidaemia and oxidative stress.
