FROM MOLECULAR DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY TO BIOMEDICINE, EVOLUTION
AND SYSTEMS BIOLOGY
UNIVERSITY OF MAASTRICHT
Safe microbial techniques and radiological work
The aim of this course is to make the students familiar
with microbiological working. The basic aspects of
contamination, infection and prevention will be dealt
with as well as working with genetically modified micro-organisms.
The various aspects of microbiology will be discussed
during the theory sessions. Aspects such as sterile
working, showing the presence of micro-organisms and
research into micro-organisms will form part of the
practical course, and there is room for the phenotypical
characterisation of micro-organisms.
Requirements are made in the nuclear energy act relative
to the training of persons who carry out work with radioactive
substances, sources and/or X-ray equipment. The course
includes theoretical education (basic physical knowledge,
the measurement of radiation, the biological effects
of radiation and protection) and practical education
(use of contamination monitors, gamma-spectrometry, the
inverse squares law, protection against external radiation
and DNA labelling with 32P).
